Private by design, not by promise

Most online unzip sites upload your archive to their server and send the files back. Scissor Zip opens and builds every archive in your browser tab, with an engine that runs on your device. There is no server that receives your files, and the page cannot send them anywhere.

That makes it fine for contracts, payroll, photos, backups and source code you would rather not hand to a stranger. See how it works and how to check it yourself.

Why people use Scissor Zip

Private by design

Archives are opened and made in your browser tab and never uploaded. There is no server that could see, keep or leak your files.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scissor Zip really private?

Yes. Every tool runs inside your browser tab with an archive engine (libarchive, compiled to WebAssembly) that downloads with the page. Your files are read from your device and the results are saved back to it. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page's security policy blocks it from contacting any other site.

Which formats can it open?

ZIP (including AES and ZipCrypto passwords), 7z, RAR and RAR5, TAR with gzip, bzip2, xz, zstd or lz4, single .gz, .xz, .bz2 and .zst files, ISO, CAB, LZH, XAR, CPIO and AR. Encrypted RAR and 7z archives cannot be opened yet.

Which formats can it create?

ZIP (optionally with an AES-256 password), 7z, and tar with gzip, xz, zstd or bzip2. RAR is a closed format that only WinRAR may create.

Is there a file size limit?

We set no limit. The work happens in your browser's memory, so very large archives (over about 2 GB) may be too much for some devices, especially phones.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and Chromebook?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.

Is it really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, no ads and no premium tier for bigger files.
