How to create a 7z file

  1. Choose files or a folder, or drop them on the page.
  2. Pick a compression level.
  3. Select Create 7z and download the archive.

Why 7z

7z uses LZMA2, which usually makes documents, code, databases and game files noticeably smaller than zip does. The trade-off is that the recipient needs an app that opens 7z, such as 7-Zip, Keka, The Unarchiver or Scissor Zip.

Solid compression

Files are compressed together as one stream, so many similar small files shrink far more than they would in a zip.

Questions about Create 7z

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is built or opened by an engine that runs inside your browser tab. Your files stay on your device, and the page works without a connection after the first visit.

Can I add a password to a 7z?

Not yet. Use Password-protect zip for an AES-256 encrypted archive.

Is 7z smaller than zip?

For text, documents and code, usually yes, often by 10 to 40 percent. Photos and videos are already compressed, so neither format shrinks them much.

How do I open a 7z?

With 7-Zip on Windows, Keka or The Unarchiver on a Mac, or Scissor Zip's Extract 7z tool on any device.
