How to create a tar.gz
- Choose files or a folder.
- Pick the compression: gzip, xz, zstd, bzip2 or none.
- Select Create archive and download it.
Which compression
gzip (.tar.gz) opens everywhere and is quick. xz (.tar.xz) makes the smallest files and is common for source releases. zstd (.tar.zst) is very fast with good compression. bzip2 is there for older systems.
What is kept
File names, folders and modification dates are stored in the POSIX (pax) format, with UTF-8 names. Permissions are set to the usual defaults: files readable, folders browsable.
Questions about Create tar.gz
Are my files uploaded?
No. The archive is built or opened by an engine that runs inside your browser tab. Your files stay on your device, and the page works without a connection after the first visit.
What is the difference between tar and tar.gz?
A .tar puts many files into one without compressing them. A .tar.gz is that same tar compressed with gzip.
How do I extract it?
On Linux and macOS, double-click it or run tar -xf name.tar.gz. On Windows 10 and 11, tar -xf works in the terminal, or use 7-Zip, or Scissor Zip's Extract tar.gz tool.
Does it keep file permissions?
Files are stored with standard permissions (644 for files, 755 for folders), because the browser cannot read the original ones.
